When does a pedal stroke give people the power to fight multiple sclerosis (MS)? Once a year, when the MS Society holds the MS 150, a bike ride from Houston to Austin.

I'll be riding in the MS 150 April 22-23, 2006. Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease of the central nervous system affecting the brain and spinal cord, and is the number one disabler of adults. The National MS Society estimates that 400,000 Americans are living with MS; worldwide, MS may affect 2.5 million people. The symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary, and can affect a person physically, mentally and emotionally.

I've been reminded a lot lately that life is precious, and good health is a gift that shouldn't be taken for granted. For me, the MS 150 is special because it is a way to use the fortune of my good health to contribute toward MS sufferers overcoming their health challenges.

I'm looking forward to riding again this year, and have set a new goal. The minimum fundraising requirement for riding in the MS 150 is $400, but I would like to raise $1,000, nearly six cents for each of the 17,000 people supported by the Lone Star (Texas) Chapter of the MS Society. Funds raised go to research, assistance programs and education. (for more info on where the funding goes, see chapter info)

Any amount you would like to give would be greatly appreciated. But, I'd like to give you an incentive. Many of you know that one of my hobbies is stained glass and glass fusing. As a special thank you, I will make a glass art piece for those who contribute $50 or more. (You will be able to choose from a fused glass pendant; mosaic votive candle holder, 3x5 picture frame, or coaster; or a suncatcher. Colors & design of your choice.)
